The one where I trash the word professional

When I worked at a plumbing company, a coworker and I had a little joke about the word professional.

You see, we weren’t what you would term “professionals”. We hadn’t been to trade schools, we hadn’t been doing it for 30 years (the boss had), and we hadn’t been certified.

And even so, we got stuff done. Small projects, big projects, simple projects, complex projects.

We were led by someone who I would label a craftsman. Someone who cared about the work for the work’s sake. Someone who actually enjoyed doing their work well.

He didn’t look like a professional, have a professional pedigree, or have “professional” in his LinkedIn bio. But he knew more and did better work than most of the professionals that we encountered. Because he had committed himself to doing good work for the past 20 years.

What’s the point?

You don’t have to be a “professional” to be successful.

Wanna be a marketer, copywriter, etc?

Just start doing it. The “professional” experience will come.
